Hi there
In the one or two internet communities (such as this), that I have been a member of in the past, I have found that an IRC Channel usually complements the main forum.
Is there an EduGeek IRC Channel or plans to create one?

I'm not allowed IRC, I'd have to setup a vpn out every time I wanted to use it :/
I created a cgiirc site last year but there wasnt much interest.
Why not set it up again...?
If there is interest?
CGI-Irc and it's varients can overcome most IRC blocking... unless the site is blocked of course!
I think with enough promotion the interest would be there, like you said some form of CGI-IRC would provide a solution for those of us who can't setup some form of tunneling.
I personally already have a lovely HTTP tunnel set up for use with my home VNC.
Not to mention the huge number of various IRC BNC's that can utilise port 80 etc.

We have been discussing a jabber implementation.

We have an IRC server for SmoothWall express - i'm sure if I asked nicely it could be used for an edugeek chan.
Daft question as I haven't checked but wouldn't IRC and possibly various IM ports be blocked by most of the filtering systems used in schools.. That in itself would doubtless remove much utility for this sort of thing.. Useful though it may be.
It could be. But our ISP don't block IM ports such as MSN and Skype. I suppose, depending on your LEA's policy, you could always ask for them to be unblocked.

I would say use a more modern tech, ie. Jabber. You can have conferences with it and also use it individually... Plus I like it better than IRC.
