diagnostic computer for a bmw
im fed up with paying the extorionate costs the aussies think they can charge owners of foreign cars for services. Im going to start doing them myselves, but I wouldnt mind seeing if I can get myself one of the diagnostic computers that outputs the error codes etc. Its a 1994 325i but i wouldnt know where to begin looking for the computer thing or what its even called.?

You need the software more than anything along with cable.
These guys are the best bet but are for the right items, but are for european cars which maybe an issue for you.

Garmin Mechanic - uses Android smartphone & Bluetooth diagnostic 'dongle' that plugs into the car.... not sure if it will work with a 1994 BMW though....
