So this is a desktop app that manages the music you already have, like iTunes and WMP (shudder)

Just a fleshwound. You are a poor shot.

I use Banshee, but that's Linux. I used to use MediaMonkey many epochs ago when I used Windows. It was good back then, and unlikely to have got worse, so might be worth a squint.

It can, yes. It is mainly an online streaming service, which you pay monthly for.

Foobar2000 is the best music player for Windows by an absolute mile. It's extremely lightweight compared to Winamp or (bleurgh) iTunes, and far more customisable than either. It does most standard stuff like media library/playlists and CD ripping out of the box, but there's also a massive plugin library for other features like iPod control. If you're a remotely technical windows user, I can't understand why you'd use any other player.

Agree, if I weren't using Spotify, that'd be my choice too. When Spotify is down, that's what I use.

I like iTunes' smart playlist features. Any tracks I listen to on my iPod I deem 'awesome' can be given 5 stars and automatically get added to my 5 star playlist. Yes the app itself it's a bit of a resource hog, but it's works nicely and does all the things I want it to.

I have Spotify free too (Includes adds in the app + radio adds between streamed music) and it offered to import all my standard playlist's form iTunes. For whatever reason though, it failed to import 90% of the tracks in the playlists. Also, even though I've spent many an evening polishing up my tags on my local music library so I know they are 100% correct, it still seems to want to relabel tracks incorrectly! It's OK, but not great.

+1 for Spotify Premium, well worth it, far nicer than iTunes, and it updates automatically so you're not forced to download & update yourself!
