Erm, ok..... you try that then

Heard a great story today involving an IT teacher and the HT at our school.

The HT went round to the IT teachers house one weekend to help him prepare for an interview that was going to put our school on the map. All was going well until our 'know it all' HT had an idea.

"I have some brilliant slides on the school network, I can access them through terminal services and they will help us a lot" the HT said.

The IT teacher said "That's great apart from internet isn't hooked up yet so we can't log on"

The HT replied with "Oh, it's fine, you don't need the internet. Just type the school web address in here and it'll load up"

The IT teacher tried explaining for ten minutes that the internet was needed for this to work after finally giving in to the "know it all" HT and saying, you're right, try it. The HT then spent half an hour trying to get it to work before giving in saying "it isn't work for some reason". The IT teacher just rolled her eyes.

Apparently she still doesn't know to this day why it wasn't working even though the IT teacher stressed and stressed that the internet was down.

Yes ... the internet was down the other day ... I remember it well ... the Americans turned it off so that they could clear out the pipes that run on the bed of the atlantic ocean. Apparently they have been getting clogged up with seaweed and that is why the internet runs slow during a full moon.

And I hate to say it but it is not only the Year 7 students that fall for this.

Or, the old chestnut we have all heard:
    "But it was working yesterday"
when we know that whatever it was has never worked, could never work and certainly doesnt work!!
    Will they listen?
    NO!!!

For added enjoyment, this can be simulated by creating a DNS alias for the domain name pointing to a local Apache server with virtual hosts 8) Just create a basic page saying 'At the request of <schoolname> this website has been removed from the Internet'

@webman: funny there are a few ways to do something like this but i must admit it never occured to me to just resolve it to an internal webpage... its pretty simple too...

    Here is two for you.

an english that i recon is just the result of someone actually doing the Weird Science experiment with a barbie doll,

"Here is your new wireless laptop [takes is home 15miles away]"
"[comes back the next day] i logged onto the network at home last night but i lost all my documents i worked on for 3 hours"
to which i really apply "you donut, wireless means not using wires on the site, i didn't install any VPN solution on your laptop"

Another was a group of students about 2 1/2 years ago (1 year after i started) we had a powercut in the school.
the students ask "is the computer network working"
"it is a powercut", i reply
"yes but the servers have big batteries dont they"
"and i answer but how will you get on to them if there is no power for the computers"

Considering i work in a grammar school, and this is the cream of the crop!

Re: Erm, ok..... you try that then

We have web based email here. At the head's request, the teachers have had this as their home page for the last 18 months...

I get told at least once a month "I can't get onto the internet"

On further probing, it turns out that they are confused because their home page isn't google.

They don't seem to understand that the email is just a website like everything else! Google is at the top of their Favorites....

    *Sighs*

Davyboi - I did that and they actually did do it, got an e-mail back from the google support team saying they were sorry that the safe search hadn't caught them and that they'd fixed the problem.

    It's not their fault really,

We have the best, a part time teacher that gets me to take her register in sims every leason she is cocering instead of team teaching, the exact quote is "I didn't have them convert my blackboard to a whiteboard when i was still here so i will not switch from using a pen to a computer unless the pen will kill me"

She has been teaching at the school since the 60s and recently retired from full time teaching
