Our KS3 for boys school is looking for interesting venues to visit with the boys - venues that apart from transport are cost free. Nothing springs to my mind but I'm hopeful that sharper brains lurking on EduGeek might come up with a few ideas?

I have been doing the same exercise for things for us and found a bit about wilts too:
Free things to do in Wiltshire England UK

Silbury Hill/West Kennet Long Barrow - they are right next to each other if I remember correctly, so two for one and just south of Avebury

is there anything in particular that you want to achieve with the kids? what sort of numbers in the group/groups?
+1 Avebury, West Kennet, Silbury Hill, Devize Lock. Cherhill monument not too far with a view of the old WW1 airfield at Yatesbury
there's an education centre in Devizes (Braeside) who might have some ideas.
Wiltshire Wildlife are based in Devizes and might be able to suggest some wildlife related locations/activities
Stonehenge
Simulator/Control Tower @ RAF Lyneham might still be available; worth contacting the Vulcan to the Sky group as the Vulcan is sometimes at Lyneham.
Wootton Bassett (small museum; discussion point for recent repatriations?)
over the border from Wiltshire and into Swindon
Lydiard Park
Education - Lydiard House and Park
Coate Water Park (orienteering course suitable for beginners)
Barbury Castle - good walk from Coate Water; good for kites.
Science Museum store at Wroughton closed for visitors at the moment.
this Saturday evening is a Kids Go Free event at the Link Centre to watch ice hockey (Swindon Wildcats vs Sheffield). There will be other kids go free games in the year.
Waylands Smithy not too far away;
Ridgeway
slightly further north into Gloucestershire :
the old RAF Kemble sometimes hosts Formula 1 test drives (though it's not set up generally for group visits).
7th and 8th July is the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford. Kids under 16 go free but a bit expensive for adults.
Cotswold Water Park (lots of pay for activities but free for the walks).
