i'd be interested how you get on with this as I will need to create a small network in a field, for a week, next summer, and am looking at the alternatives for hardware. The big wired players have said they can't help as it is in the middle of nowhere, but i can get a good hsdpa vodafone signal. Vodafone have said they will do a couple of 'no contract', 'data only' pay as you go sims for us that we can load with cash, and if we get low we can top up!
However... i hope you clocked that the ebay jobby in the OP needs a cellular modem plugged into it to work... which, at first glance on google shopping, doesn't seem very cheap!

My experience is that my mifi router at home gets about 6mb speed on average but varies a huge amount on time of day AND site so windows updates at 7pm are very slow but i can reliably at same time watch the daily show in a browser. This morning i downloaded a 2gb file and was getting 600kb+ a second but it did fluctuate a bit (a similar file on my bt line is doing 130k and still going but im close to my bandwidth limit) the wifi works well but can take a while to be found and my tablet often gives up and connects to my bt router instead but once it "wakes up" i have no real problems with it . Just dont go over allowence it looks expensive
It all depends on location, its the same with your phone 3g signal. I had the 3 Dongle, and had drop outs at peak times but othertimes it was brilliant.
