hi everyone
just wondering who is your line manager.Mine is supposed to be our head of ict but im looking to change this and make ict support a separate department and have the headteacher as our line manager.
currently they is me and another ict technician who doent have a job description yet and me who is still negotiating on a new one and more pay.
i think the structure should be
head
me (promoted to senior technician or network manager) and then i line manager the other technician
at the moment its this
head
head of ict
me/other technician (head of ict is line manager to both of us)
cheers
mark

I happy with it as I am essentially left to "get on with it".

It goes Head -> Bursar -> Me here.
Hopefully one day it'll go
Head -> Bursar -> Me -> PFY.

Re: line managers?
Head
:
Director of Finance and Administration (essentially a bursar)
:
Me (Network Manager)
:
Network Technician + ICT Technician
When I started I was the only techie reporting to the Head of ICT and then the Bursar. Been here 8 years now and finally got to an official managers status.
In my opinion schools should adapt this structure more as it frees up the Head of ICT, who is usually the ICT co-ordinator as well, to focus on other things. This does require a ICT techie who is capable of being a manager though.

The line manager, err, line manages
They are your point of contact for grievences, they're the one who deals with your job description and that sort of thing, and they tell you what to do (or not, depending on how much autonomy you have).

What if your line manager is no good and you have no faith in him?

I foolishly teach & ict curriculm, manage systems + info so report directly to the Head. As far as I'm concerned, so long as your boss is supportive, the flatter the hierarchy the better in a small school.

Then you should keep track of the problems and confront them with them. If they do nothing, go up the ranks and speak to their manager.

I wasn't technically employed by my school but i had to answer to people in this order.
Head
|
Head of ICT / Site Manager (for different things as in master key use etc)
|
Network Manager / Engineer
|
ICT Services Team Leader
|
Me
Often it would just be liasing with the head of ICT directly. But because i was a student the school pastoral system got involved occassionally. IE form tutor, head of VI form etc.
And of course. Being a student you cant actually speak out if you think something is unfair because you risk putting staff in awkward positions and compromising their proffessional integrity. The best you can do, as a student tech leastways is talk to a form tutor and then let them take it from there.
So any student tech's reading this! Take heed!

XCurric CoOrdinator/ Ass Head

senior tech & junior tech
I always argue that the xCurric CoOrdinator and the Bursar cannot be line managers because they have a vested interest in their own sections. In deed my line manager is x Music teach and so has a bias towards that when asking for personal favours.
It's never worked in the past - whilst I can stay neutral teachers lower than the Head cannot.
It's weird in my school anyway as the Head will over-rule the XCurricCoOrd at will, it's all a hillarious power struggle (or is it!) - or is it like this everywhere?!
