Then you should keep track of the problems and confront them with them. If they do nothing, go up the ranks and speak to their manager.
Of course that assumes that their manager has a clue and has the balls to do something about it. IME, politics usually gets in the way, anything for an easier life until something really bad happens... best to keep a copy of any evidence as it's always us who get the ear bashing... don't get me started!!!

    Re: line managers?

I have been left happily getting on with the network for 5 years and in those 5 years i have only come across 2 problems and they are both female related (and before any one says that i am sexist they are totally wrong) Both are ICT teachers who do not have a clue as to the complexities of the network and how it operates all they are bothered about is themselves and making their jobs oh so much easier if by this making my life hell.

e.g. e-mail from ICT co-ordinator this morning reminding me (after she has been off work for approx 18 months) about some software that i told her was not networkable due to the fact it would only allow one workstation at a time to access the files (i know this because it tells me so in the notes accompanying the software) the software is called Interactive (he he) Whiteboard charts by daydream education (yes a very apt name indeed).

It seems she has come back part time (2 full time days per week) as she cannot manage a full week at the moment due to an accident she had in her car 18 months ago (lost control due to ice, just happened to be a sports car) So she comes back gets promotion and immediately goes to work getting my back up by making stupid suggestions and remarks.

Oh and BTW while she was off all this time did i get one e-mail of thanks or guidance i.e. updates............NO! she had the gall to come in after 18 months and tell me on the friday that the QCA and OCR exams were scheduled for the following Monday, well jolly bloody dee as if i didn't know, it was me that sorted all the exams out with a little admin work from the exams officer but no doubt she will be accredited with the performance.

I have been told that she is to be my new line manager well all i can say to that is "Hell will freeze over first"

    Re: line managers?

My boss is an assistant head (who is also the director of technology - we are a tech college). The arrangement works quite well but formally I suppose we do still come under "ICT" - I am trying to get this changed though as a culture move because I think it makes other people still think you are there for the benefit of the ICT department and not the whole school!

    Re: line managers?

My line manager is also an assistant head, ultimately he has the final say, but he always (i quote) "trust in your good judgement", and pretty much if i say something, it goes.

    Re: line managers?

    For me it goes:

    Head
Deputy Head 1 (Power struggle with above)
    Deputy Head 2
    Assistant Head 1
    Assistant Head 2
    Assistant Head 3
    Assistant Head 4
    Assistant Head 5
    Assistant Head 6
    Head of ICT Curriculum
2nd in command Head of ICT Curriculum
    Network Manager
    Senior ICTO
    ICTO x2

Talk about a food chain, no wonder the last team could never get anything done!

    Re: line managers?

    Head / IEB

Director of Learning, assigned to take my reports (poor woman)

Me, heading up a team of two - should be five, welcome to spending cut hell.

In practise I am largly left to myself - IE I get the responsiblity & the blame, which is fair enough. There seems to be a degree of regonition that I don't pretend to know teaching and therfore stay out of it. In return they don't tell me how to do my job, I am simply required to make work properly.

What is a major pain the in rear is the lack of regontion that should attact a degee of intrest in what is going on and what it takes to do it - however that is somewhat lacking in most places I fear.

    Re: line managers?

so with some schools having a variety of people who could be considered line managers and users demanding service how do you prioritize the work to be done?

    Re: line managers?

Priority 1 - whole school issues. Servers going down, no access to the internet ... that sort of thing.

Priority 2 - anything affecting the learning of a whole class or group of classes. This can be a switch failed in a single room or even the failure of a teacher's laptop or projector if it is delivering course materials to the whole class.

    Priority 3 - individual user.

Some things might get squeezed in if time allows ... password changes take seconds so can be done quickly ... and if a call comes in from Senior Manglement then they get the option to go to the top of the list ... but only after you mention "if I do this for you it means that I cannot do x for class y ... as long as you are happy that you want me to do it that way" ... they take responsibility for something not being done.

And everyone is happy ... erm ... ish

    Re: line managers?

For tech related matters (in both schools):

Very part time network manager (works for loads of other schools) -->
me (also part time as work for two schools)

For anything else (in both schools):

Head teacher --> ICT coordinator --> Me

That can't be right. There can be a number of managers in the chain of command but surely you only report to one person on a day to day basis.

    Re: line managers?

It feels like a have 4; One official Line Manger in charge of personnel etc. who I never see, an ass head (it's an abbreviation of assistant, honest) in charge of technology status, ass head in charge of timetabling and assessment (yes I play a MAJOR role in those also). The ICT co-ordinator swings a lot of weight so when she requests something it gets done. I then line manage: 2 ICT Techs, 2 Sci Techs, 2 DT Techs, and soon to be one admin staff assigned to us.
