You contact your tax office and they will give you a form to fill in. Quite quickly you will get a slightly increased tax allowance to offset the tax you have paid on your contributions (because all the money you have has already been taxed and union membership costs are free of tax)
    Hope that makes sense

It's been abolished from Jan 2011 but previous years you may be able to get it back dated.

    Reasons for membership are complicated.

Suffice to say that I am not happy with what the have been able to do for me thus far.

    Same here.

But I pretty much had to sort things out myself... Not impressed at all.

Not a member of a union, got Legal Advisory Services available to me via the BCS - that's about it. Use to be a member of PCS, but to be honest the amount I was paying out vs what I got out of it wasn't worth it.

I'm in Unite. Was in Unison but was highly annoyed at the lack of information given to use from our local branch and also our onsite rep was quite useless (which was after we'd pointed out that the previous rep had a conflict of interest seeing as she was the head's PA). We decided to change to Unite because of the onsite rep. Basically they're caring and friendly and whenever there's been info,we've received it without delay. Also,Unite charge a flat rate for a membership fee whereas Unison charge different amounts depending on how much you get paid.

Voice. Never really needed them but I know that local Unison members weren't happy at times with their rep (although it may be a different one now) and that the GMB members could never get hold of anybody.
