    Yeah I have one somewhere

    Plan is the followling

    Server 1 Mirror 2 of the 6 disks and install the ESXi OS onto this, I know 250GB is way over kill, but it keeps it simple, the other 4 250GB are going to be raid 5. They are setting up as I type.. (they take ages)

    Server 2 This will have a 16GB pen drive in the internal USB port, and the 6 250GB disks will be removed, and 2TB disks will be installed, in RAID 6. Need to find out tho 1st if the PERC 6/I card can take 2TB disks. Dont see why not. That way I get the best storage out of it for the VMs and the files which will be going onto it.

    What is server one going to be running can you not use the 250gb disks you're taking out of server 2 to increase the storage or to enable you to run raid6 on server 1?

    Server 1 already has 6 250GB hard disks.

    Both servers will be running ESXi, just the 1st dosnt really need much space as it will only have about 4 / 5 VMs tops.

    Were as server 2, will be hosting about 10 VMS, and media servers. hence the 6 2TB disks.

    @IKWeb:

    We run 3 of these with 2 x 73Gb drives mirrored coupled to a Sun 7110 SAN for the VM's with 3 x 1Gb nics on each server one of them for redundancy and Xenserver as the hypervisor with HA running off an old NAS box.

    They are incredible!!!

    Hi Guys

    Well just got ESXI 5 installed, just installing the 1st DC. amazing how fast these servers run.

    Need to look into a NAS now, which I guess I would connect to the Dell server via RJ45 ???

    @IKWeb:

    Yes that's how we have it, 3 x 1Gb nics and the speed of them is just great.

    Our primary network servers are all PE 2950s. 5x Bare metal for the RM CC4 servers, and 3x XenServer hosts. They vary in RAM between 4 and 32GB, all have 10k SAS disks in RAID1 but are also attached to 2 SANs. We've never had any problems with them. As kmount said, they're great boxes. If all is in working order, you've got yourself a good deal

    So 6 disks are all you can get in them? Keep the other disks as cold spares?

    Yep. I thought 6 disks was quite good.

    the 250 would be spear yeah, and also spari for Server 1 as thats using 6 250gb disks.

    Looking at a NAS now to extent the system storage.

    Ahh I know a few people who work in data centers and when they replace kit the old stuff... I say old but normally its only 15month old when it gets replaced, they sell it off cheap.

    Wow - I'd love to replace servers after 15 months. I suppose data centre servers get a hammering. Are they for sale to the general education public - as in could my school get some?

    Regards

    Gareth
