For those of you who don't know, if your house falls into the old "parish" boundary of a nearby church, and it needs church/steeple renovation, they have full right to ask every homeowner within the parish boundry to give money towards repair. Hence, insurance in case this happens.

I'm really surprised that that law is legal and in line with modern Human Rights laws. For example, would a Muslim have to pay for a Christian church repair? That isn't allowing them freedom of religion...

They can ask. But you should have the full right to tell them to get stuffed.

I believe I'm right in saying that the Cathedral Board of St Pauls has a number of members who are from the Corporation of London....

The words "interest" "conflict" and "of" spring to mind, but in no particular order...........

Therefore, as much as the Dean, or whoever, doesn't MIND the protesters being on Church grounds, the Board may, and almost certainly WILL, have other ideas...

People can argue conflict of interests for pretty much everything though ...

CofE, The Royal Family and the State.
Any firm which markets based on Fair Trade products which have a *large* mark up.
BT being involved in any security conversation around Telcos
Even in EG you could argue that some members have conflicts due to who they work for (commercial firms, LAs, rival schools, etc)
Most schools have to deal with this on a daily basis with parents who are teachers, staff and parents who are governors ...

The idea of separation of roles is nothing new and is done to varying degrees. On one side you want people with expertise, passion and belief in what you are doing, but also have to accept that you have to trust them to be honest and open, and to separate their duties.

Then again, it is like anything else when people want to argue a particular point or justify something, you can always fine a point to argue. I am sure that with half a brain we could come up with wonderful examples about how many of the protestors here that they have conflicts of interests, hidden motives and so on and so forth. You could even make it an exercise in how to have a debate. Get two people to argue both sides, they stick it down on paper and we have to guess which person really is pro-protest and which anti-protest.

And yes... this is why fence sitting is a wonderful hobby.
