Today marks the first day of my school's OFSTED inspection. I am friends with an inspector and understand why she became one (a second income) - however, that can't be the only reason.
Which leads me, in a rather convoluted way, to ask:
If you weren't an EduGeek, what job are you most likely to have done instead?
For example, I would probably be still working towards becoming a psychologist.
If it wasn’t for the lack of money I would work with horse’s. Most likely as a stable hand not a riding instructor. Although ideally it would be a stable hand that trained young horse’s and did a few lessons here and there.
Back in 2003 I applied to become a police officer, but unfortunately failed at the last hurdle, then had to wait 1 year to apply again, in which time other opportunities presented themselves. And so I never applied again, but that is what I would want to do if I were not an edugeek.
And to try and put another question out there, Do any of you have second jobs to supplement your income? I have had to start work at Sainburys 3 evenings a week, what a bummer!!!!!!!!!!!

I have several ideas of what I would like to do instead of edugeeking - one of them is also edugeeking, but in a Uni instead of a school.
The other would be a theatre lighting technician/events lighting technician or similar.

I'd probably have followed an academic route and gone down the programming route, but that was about 3 or 4 years ago - I don't think I want to do that sort of thing full-time now. If I left education I'd probably go for IT Support/Network Managing/Cabling engineer sort of role.
Outside of IT I've previously thought about television - camera, grip, vision mixing etc.
I do that for a small company in the nearby town - we do large outdoor airshows and small indoor amateur productions (and everything in between).Originally Posted by localzuk
One word of advice though: If you are going to do an outdoor event, make sure you have a nice caravan!

I've tried most of the other things I wanted to do over the years ... Coach, police, paladin (damn ... must remember the WoW is not real!) and fell into computers by accident ...
If my knee was better I might want to go back into training to be an Olympic competitor ... not actually be one as I was not good enough, but I wouldn't mind being paid to train as one :-)
Well i was a Trained Killer untill I became a pacifist. Police Officer maybe. I would love to work for myself but i havnt got the balls to start my own Business.
This sounds naff, but this is what I want to do! If I wasn't EduGeeking, then I would do some other form of geeking, ideally within the charity / not-for-profit sectors.
I do a bit of home support work for the RNIB (Institute for the Blind) as well as some IT consultancy for a local charity, so if my Lottery numbers come up, then I would probably do more of that. Until then (which will be a while as I don't buy tickets!), I'll have to limit that to my spare time.
I used to be a shop manager till an accident wrecked my knee 16 years ago. I suppose now if I wasn't in IT I would be running my own business probably a goth / alternative shop and promoting bands.
I would be an electrical engineer as I qualified to do that just 2 months before quitting and moving into I.T. Ironically I could be earning better money doing it these days due to a shortage in the field in Scotland..

I trained to be a Merchant Navy Radio Officer but there weren't any jobs to be had when I qualified. So I would have done that back then, but who knows what I would be doing now!!
I would be a spirit level bubble inserter or the person who puts the holes in the bourbon biscuits.

Video production & editing for me.
Do the odd freelance job, I'd love to do it full time.
The pay's amazing too......
The last two non-IT jobs I applied for were paramedic and a CNC police officer (Civil Nuclear Constabulary), didn't get very far through either process unfortunately.
As for jobs on the side, I do a bit of web design/development work for a couple of organisations, some paid, some not.
