To Chips or not to Chips!

Our school has decided to get rid of Chips from it's school dinner menu, so that it can start to move towards healthier meals. Now, that is all good, and I'm not particularly fussed because frankly the chips in my school were poor, soggy and not worth the potatoes they were made out of.

It's all good telling the kids and their parents that they are trying to be healthier, but, when you look at what chips have been replaced with (see below), you begin to wonder what exactly constitutes chips...

Fried Potato cut into little cubes
    Fried Potato cut into slices
    Fried Potato wedges
    Fried Potato smiles

Now correct me if I am wrong, but has chips really been removed from our menu?

Whats even funnier is that when you buy something, the caters actually ask, "Would you like chips with that?"

On a side note, I'm getting more and more fed up with the quality of the poorer and poorer quality processed food that I wouldn't feed my dog. Whatever happened to Jamie Oliver and his big deal he made at number 10?

Our catering is now all in-house...and i have to say, bloody excellent.

Curries, fresh wraps, salads, pies. All home cooked and fresh as hell.

And for £1.38 for a two-course meal, you can't go wrong!

God knows what the kids eat, but I dont go near our canteen. I head out for something from Marks and Spencer, Greggs or Oggys downtown. On occassion I sometimes go with a BurgerKing or KFC for lunch

Snap. Since our school dumped the contractors and employed a catering manager the quality of the school meals has increased significantly. Really good quality and affordable food. The Canteen is even making a profit and expanding to a milk bar and coffee bar for 6thformers.

We banned chips for 4 days a week, only available of Friday. But with lunch times passes allowed they eat chips, kentucky or any other crap they can get their hands on.

The canteen meals have improved but for some kids this will never change.

Re: To Chips or not to Chips!

We have all in house prepared food with no processed junk. It is of a generally high quality (they could do with stronger cheese in the macaroni cheese though).

We have chips available once per week, and they are cooked in vegetable oil. Salt is not available at all and no food is cooked with it added.

So, chips haven't vanished - they've just been restricted.

Oh, and the kids love the food here. None of that 'junk food being secreted in by parents' nonsense.

Re: To Chips or not to Chips!

I personally can't see the food ever being done in house here. I think the current catering staff are too damn lazy to start off with! They seem perfectly happy with the processed junk.

It's also a pain that even though we're based in East London, we're about 15 minutes away from any sort of "decent" food places. (With an official 30 min lunch, its not feasible) Albeit there are a couple of shoddy looking cafes. However, my religious requirements pretty much rule that out...

I once tried going to the local Tesco for a week before work, but at that time, they haven't stocked any of the sandwiches or pasta salad's yet!

    Packed Lunches it is then!

Re: To Chips or not to Chips!

Our school kids now seem to only eat burgers, pizzas, cookies and cakes since we turned healthy and chips plus sweets were removed from the menu.

There's a chip shop and Spar accross the road but they're out of bounds too.

All Dorset First and Middle schools have no in-house catering. It was removed about 10 years ago.
Mind you, after all this furore over food, Dorset are now FUNDING schools to put back some space to cater in (most ripped out their kitchens) and will be spending a fortune paying a catering company to cook the foos and bus it in to the schools!!!

We have an excellent catering team at our school - but then again, we need it. I would guess that 50% of our kids get free lunch and then about another 10% buy lunch.

Heh! We have about 90-95% of our kids on Free Meals! Pretty much all the rest pay, with hardly any packed lunches...

I guess if you claim free you just get poor quality, regardless all the staff pay!
