Steve Jobs Resigns as CEO of Apple

    Doesn't sound good does it?

    He becomes chairman.

    USA Today story:
    USA Today

    Letter of resignation:
    Resignation Details

"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come," he wrote in a letter to the Apple Board of Directors and "the Apple Community."

Was going to post a joke but won't bother - I've nothing really good to say except I'd rather it was someone less visionary (i.e. the lying, thieving gits in their legal & marketing departments) that was disappearing.
In all seriousness though, I wish Steve all the best. I don't like Apple as a company and it's unlikely I ever will, but denying what he has put into the company and the IT world as a whole would just be daft.

It's still a shame as you can't deny that Jobs has done an amazing job at Apple and they've produced some amazing kit.

It's just very sad that it looks like he's in bad shape.

Well, he's still going to be head of the board, which means that he should still have a lot of sway in the future direction of Apple, but for all of his faults he has been instrumental in bringing Apple back from the brink in the late 90's and making it into the worlds most valuble company (Apple becomes world's most valuable company | News | TechRadar UK), and that took a lot of vision, and it shows as many of the worlds largest IT and tech companies played catch up and began to copy Apple design features and integrate them into their own products. And lets not forget the infuance and effect iPods and iPhones have had on the music and telephony business. I do wish him well and hope his health keeps him going for quite some time yet, because, faults aside, he was a master of innovation in regards to recognising what would and would not work, and that is exactly what the IT world needs. If it wasn't for him, we'd still be using beige boxes and using CD Walkmans.

liking the kit, and being able to appreciate it as a technical excercise as two very different things.

I desperately do not like to use their kit, i find it over simplified and lacking user control, but as something that was ground breaking, visionary and trendsetting, you have to appreciate what apple has become technically.

(but i still maintain itunes is the work of the devil)

The end of an era really. Say what you will about him, he was a hell of a CEO.

In the short term, we won't notice any difference I don't think, but in a longer term? ie. New products? New ideas? That's going to be where the difference is seen. 5 years down the line, we'll have a different company I reckon.

I'm surprised he has not tried to patent black t-shirts and then when he has sue everyone on the planet who has one. He has does an amazing job of marketing and making 'cool' products - that is all. The MP3 player was out before the ipod, the tablet concept was out years before the ipad, and a PC is far better value for money than any Mac Book. Still he has made billions by sticking an 'apple logo' on re-desigined equipment and by changing their colour. For that I hold up my hands and say well done - if only I had stayed awake in class it may have been me........
