I assume you have technicians on site? If so, tell them what sites you need. They will then unblock them for you.

As for blocking that proxy, are you saying you wouldn't have done the same in your technicians situation? You see students purposely breaking a vital rule... so you ignore it, or put a stop to it? It's just common sense really isn't it?

I agree, if only our management team were as supportive! In sept (under BSF) we plan on blocking all e-maill access for all students and staff except the 'LEA email accounts, such as 'surname.firstname@school.LEA.sch.uk', this will help us track the students better and cut down on cyber bullying, however! We did a trial and just blocked MSN (email, not messenger as that is already blocked) and within 2 mins the whole of the senior management team were on the phone, putting complaints to the LEA and going totally off it. So if we cannot even get the backing of the management on this matter, how are we meant to get the teaching and students to do it?!?!

Any ideas welcome, i think i will start a seperate topic for this as this is not exactly appropriate!

Understandable in the case of students though, whereas staff might use the email for receiving/sending mails to the DFES, LEA, CC and other schools, students would tend to gravitate towards using the mails for socializing, chatting to mates in and out of lessons, sending amusing pictures and files etc

So I can see why students mail access might be blocked..though I have never quite understood the logic of blocking staff access

We block all chat systems where we can, such as bebo, mebo etc, however 6th form are allowed (apparently) MSN and we currently have 3rd tools (such as good old Ranger LAN) as we are phasing through BSF and they only want to use MS Group Polices and some class room management tools etc.

The reason the staff access is blocked is simply because it was a small minority of the teaching staff that were given the proxy bypass sites to the kids, we had our seior technical analyst on site once and we caught a senior staff member on a bypass site, using mebo and chatting to an ex, this included some...erm.....sensitive subjects shall we say!

So at the end of the day, the staff are just as bad as the kids at my place!

When I was at college (2002-2004) hotmail was blocked. As I had a hotmail account as my main account at the time, this was a bit of a pain. Student e-mail was not provided by the college. The reason they gave for blocking hotmail was for protection of the network (all the viruses and spyware that is spread via hotmail).

I didn't complain though. For the times I needed to use e-mail for my work, there were alternative e-mail providers to be used. As for personal e-mail, that wasn't why the college internet connection was provided so I put up with it.

When you look at todays sue culture, you'll understand exactly why the filters are as strict as they are. If you don't understand that now, you will in a few years time. We have to be seen to be minimising risks as much as possible, for the sake of the students, the college/school and ourselves.

(EDIT: Inserted the CORRECT college dates... I am not THAT young, I am 21 )

I don't think we need to go posting lists in here lol.
Would be good if we had a URL 'dump' where we could just dump our blacklists and it'd remove the duplicates so we have one massive blacklist.

I installed IPCop here as the school was depending just on the broadband providers filter (which is crap! and has blocked edugeek.net but not EduGeek.net). The students are able to get around the most of the blocked sites by adding "https://". But IPCop stops those attempts aswell, just means I have to hunt down the sites. Which isn't too bad with Vision, Securus and my Student Tracker (So i know where the trouble kids are!)

Why not make more use of the time and buy a product that does this for you. i.e FinestLogic | WebSure - Content Filtering | WebSure or Websense.

Im using DGurdian with the Blacklist downloads also. I havent looked at what is getting through at the moment but I keep getting asked for 'proxy sites' by those certain kids, so it must be ok

Default someting to look at

I have posted a few times on here and have looked around. I generally am not one to tell someone how to block or stop someone. I do believe that anyone that works at schools should try this though. It may save you from a smart student that wants to distrupt the internet. I do not know how to stop them but I will let you know what you need to try to prevent. Access to the schools routers and services. I can do it at my school and showed one of the computer teachers so that he could show the Admins. Type in the schools IP. Go to the command prompt and type in ipconfig/all, after you know the ip go to the internet address bar and type in the ip address, it will bypass the proxy you use since it goes to the router not the internet and it will let the person who goes there configure the internet rules to their liking and shut it down if they wish. Yes, students may not know the ip and can't use the command prompt, but I found ours by typing in mine. Routers have a preset local IP for access by a connected computer. Most routers have the same IP. If your in NC it is more then likely one of the following 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, 192.168.2.1 those three ips will access most routers from a base computer connected to it. Check it out, your school or organization may have figured this out already but mine has not so I am bringing it to the attention of those it should concern.
