I've just had this message written to me:

dear mr knight,

i overhear that you can see and read what i am typing. I find this most offensive and as this is not the matrix please stop spying on me. all I want is to go on myspace during my free periods and check my email. i am in 6th form and a female so therefore there is no interest in porn. I also believe that the world wide web belongs to everybody and no one person can own it or control it.

i understand your need to stop immature children from going on pornographic websites and other websites during their lesson time, however I believe that i should have access toat least myspace. I mean come on. I just want to check if someones messaged me.

you know what i cant be bothered with this anymore. stop freakin spying on me you scary man. I dont like it and its an invasion of my privacy. please stop before i get mad and do something drastic like crash your system. yeah i have friends that can do that i dont want to but if your gonna play like that with your matrix spy games then i guess its only fair...

i would post you this but my bet is that your already reading it as I type or at least i hope so coz it saves me a whole lot of hassle. You are most scary with with your spying.

I do understand the frustation of 5th and 6th years in the school with regards to Bebo etc but there are reasons behind them being banned and we're not just doing it to give ourselves some sort of perverted power rush.

Whilst I understand your concern that there may be people policing the internet and you feel that this is neither appropriate or warranted, there are a few real world implications of what you wish.

Just as I am watching you, there is someone watching me to make sure I do not allow any students or staff to have fun whilst on computers in school. If I do not do this properly the Americans will come and invade our school.

We also have to check which student need the mind implant so we can read your thoughts. This is to save time reading every single one of the 40,000 emails that are sent or received by people in the school each day.

Then we have to consider that you might be doing a double bluff. You may *claim* to be a sixth form girl, but I have it on good authority from a testing lab in China that you name is really David and you are going to compete in the women's 1500 metres in the London Olympics.

This means that I cannot take seriously about what you say about not watching porn.

I am glad you are scared ... you should be ... I have been watching you for weeks now and think you are ripe for the next phase of my plan. I will be using your brain as part of a supercomputer to bring D&D to life ... I had planned on using you as a Dwarf since you are already hairy and have a fondness for metal clothing, but you are obviously trying mind games with me ... so you are bumped up to an elven mage!

I do hope you take chance to read this ... and remember ... I can talk rubbish too and the fact that you think I have time to even bother reading everything that every single person does is not only stupid, it is impossible.

Most of the systems that check for things in breach of the AUP are automated and then report back when they find things ... most of the time these things are not a concern to me.

As for more access to things on the internet ... I am afraid not. You are still a student here and there is still a duty of care that has to be applied. Part of the process of growing up is accepting that you cannot always control things you would like to control and what you can and cannot access on the internet is one of them.

When you get out into the big wide world tou may find that you have no external internet access at your workplace. This could be for security reasons, it could be for productivity reasons ... get used to it.

Finally ... I have now deleted all your work, given everyone access to all your emails and sent porn from your email account to the Head. This message will delete once you have finished ready it ....

In response to the points you have highlighted in your message:

Yes I can see what is happening on the network, any good network manager needs to be aware of the things happening on his network.

I am not spying on you, I am checking that the network does not get abused. A number of the students take the mickey, therefore you make well only use the internet for anything other than school work during your free periods, however, other students don't, and I'm not prepared to make one rule for you, and one for the others, especially as you threaten to "crash the system".

Earlier in the year, I was going to give 6th formers more freedom, however, a number of 6th formers went too far, and I put you all back on the same policy as the rest of the school, so, a number of people ruined it for the rest of you. I would point out, that if students behave as children, I will treat them as a children.

We're you to send this message to the network manager of the company that you worked for, you could reasonably expect to be called to see your manager, and if not sacked, have a written warning.

This is not an invasion of you privacy, in order to use these public computers, you do so under a set of rules, which you agreed to in Y7, and some of which are displayed on posters around the school.

Whilst you claim that you believe "that the world wide web belongs to everybody and no one person can own it or control it.", this is a somewhat immature attitude. The www is still policed, even if you are unaware of it. Everything that is done on the internet is logged somewhere, that is how the police track and catch such people as paedophiles who use the internet.

Website such as MySpace & Bebo are blocked because social network site are actively targeted by such people, and they are experts at deceiving young impressionable children. Therefore, the school has taken the decision to prevent the school computers being used to access sites such as these. I didn't make the decision, I just enforce it.

Finally, I have never played D&D, although I am disappointed to find out that it isn't real.

And in answer to localzuk, I have to admit that I picked it up whilst "spying" using Securus!!!!
