Not having the backup would be bad, however the permission thing could have been mandated against his advice. While job description may put him at blame for the lost data; I prefer a real world example...

If the person in charge of installing sprinklers doesnt get to an area of a building before someone commits arson and burns down that half of the building, do you blame the guy in charge of getting sprinklers installed for the rooms that burned? He should have known to do those rooms first? I think then it becomes clear that you should hold the person who lit the fire accountable.

So the teacher who left thierself logged in should be responsibe, that is how it is wriiten in our policy ( your login; your butt.) And it should serve as a wakeup call to get that added to the backup.

Well the latest news is that they managed to recover about 50% of the data although not all of it is usable. They went the cheap option and bought software rather than getting a firm in who promised at least 70% recovery would be usable.. although they did quote £14,000 to try.

I doubt anyone will be taken to task over it, this council really is poor for cracking down on staff. Having said that I bet I get fired for posting this!

    :-D

The permissions thing is similar at my school. It took me ages to persuade the admin staff that, as I am the Network Manager, I should have access to their server in case something goes wrong.

By sheer chance, the day after I got the access, something went wrong and I was able to fix it (and I didn't look smug at all).

We have had further problems with backups, so now we have two backup machines - which seems to do the job quite nicely.
