    Proud of my invention!

So proud in fact I shall share it

I present to you, my Acme Fibre Network Cable Tester!

    Proud of my invention!-img00036-20110616-1414.jpg

    1 x 9v Battery
    1 x Box
2 x Random Stolen LEDs & Cable from a case
    1 x Button
    1 x Fibre LC Patch Panel Doo-dah.
    BluTack.
    PVC Tape.

    To Do:
    Add Gaffer Tape.

Works a charm and saves us holding one end to a light source and squinting down the other end

Now just need to find a brighter light source so we can use it with single mode fibre.

Fairly sure they already exist Just needed something rough and ready to test the fibre linking our sites!

Edit: jesus, they do exist but at nearly 80 quid a pop! Time to find some more of those little boxes! (funnily enough they're dlink fibre gbic boxes!)

Many simple electronics like this (no offence, I mean only simple in design ) are massively overpriced - you could make a very professional looking version for peanuts by picking up the components you need and a metal box for them from somewhere like Bitsbox - UK Electronic Components Distributor

At one school I had a very old fibre converter (it ran at just 10MBs to give you an idea of the age of it) which had a 'test' mode on which basically shone a red light out of both the receiver and transmitter node on the box - presumably designed for this very purpose, was dead handy and I used it a lot. I've never seen it on any other fibre converter since mind.

How about a Cree XM-L T6 type, about 900 lumen Max should be visible down the end of a fibre!

They're great, I've ordered from them numerous times so I can vouch for them appears to be a one man operation but he's a very friendly guy, always get stuff quickly and on the odd occasion (once!) I've received the wrong component, he's sent me the correct one immediately and let me keep whatever he sent by mistake
