    Re: WSUS ?

How about you get wsus setup first then?

Then you can worry about pointing the clients to it.

    Aren't the MS whitepapers sufficient?

If you are having a specific problem during a WSUS deployment just post a question. I'm sure we can help.

It's not hard to setup. you can blag most of it by skimming through the interface. You then just have to set the GPO to get it to point at that server and set the client options.

Make sure you override the reboot options for your servers though

Apparently it was done by the previous person who used to work here aprox 2 years ago and need to read those white papers that you posted above.

Will post back later on if I get stuck on anything

That's pretty much it really. Although you do have to watch that you meet the pre-requisites. And if you are upgrading a SUS server to WSUS there are some things you need to watch for. Oh and then setting the GPO properly..and also making sure that clients check in when they should..meh..it'll be fine

    Re: WSUS ?

In the editing of the group policy for specify intranet microsoft update server location, I have pointed it to the wsus server which is nimlok-srv and it picks up the machines fine and using the wsus GUI I have made 2 groups one for xp clients and one for 2000 clients and have shifted the relevant machines into those 2 groups, I have left the servers un assigned but when I go to view reports it isnt picking up any machines to view the status of what updates they need or which ones failed etc.

I have tried checking the boxes and clicking apply and using the plus symbol to expand the view but nothing shows up at all.

What am I missing ( aside from pebkac lol )

    Re: WSUS ?

Have the machines successfully reported in? or have they just been detected? (You can check this by looking at the 'last status report' column).

    Re: WSUS ?

Most of them have a date and time of when they last reported in ( aside from the odd few which have a blue icon with an i.

You should get info for the ones that don't have the blue 'i'.

The only thing that I can think of is that as I am synchronising to get the updates that the only time it shows anything up is if i check the unknown checkbox otherwise nothing shows up on the status of updates report.
