We have a lovely teacher who's bought a netbook and wants Microsoft Office on it. After going through the usual 'could you just give me a copy' conversation, and 'understanding' that I've paid for enough copies for the school and can't just put it on her computer, she decided to buy a copy online.
She ordered it as a download. Today she came in to give me a potted geranium as thanks for helping her. I assumed it had worked, but she reluctantly admitted that she'd saved it, but it hadn't asked for 'that code' and it didn't work; neither did MSE which she'd also downloaded.
* sigh *
So now I've demoed downloading MSE and deciding where to save it, double clicking on it to run the install....
I never realised it could be so difficult to explain the difference between a download and an installation. Just hope it works this time. It's not even as if she's one of my nuisance teachers... I feel really sorry for her. I'm doing my best not to offer to take the netbook off her, but...

How about making an analogy to redecorating a room:
Downloading: Going to B&Q to pick your desired wallpaper and then Pay for them at the checkout
Installing: The process of sticking the wallpaper to the walls

19th May 2011, 08:04 PM #4 Like that one Gatt. I tried explaining that the download was like buying the CD and that until you run the CD (download) the software isn't installed, but she couldn't see the difference between downloading and installing.
