Does any school out there have a dedicated network for Music, in order to deliver music tech courses?
Ours was custom-built out of our old scraps by a music tech a few years back, then was suddenly dropped in our laps, and is becoming an unweildy beast that is demanding more and more money and more and more support time. Just wondered if anyone else had a separate set-up for Music and whether it had become part of the mainstream ICT Support development plan and budget.
Cheers.

6th April 2011, 02:48 PM #2 Our music dept have Macs which are bound to Active Directory using a 3rd party product ADmitMac. Data is saved on a dedicated NAS. Took some setting up when we did it 18 months ago but I can honestly say that over the past 12 months the Music dept have required less than 3 hours technician time.

6th April 2011, 04:41 PM #3 Our music Depts use PC's which are fully on our network using things like Cubase, Sibelius, Audacity etc. No real problems other than the fact the PC's are 4 years old now and need to be refreshed. Aside from a bit of a pain getting the music software MSI'd and rolled out in the first place I've barely needed to go down there in the last 4 years.

6th April 2011, 08:46 PM #4 On the same network here on windows 7 desktops. Cubase, Sibelius, Nuendo and all mostly runs fine. Main problems are with users and teachers not knowing how to do stuff on the software and having to teach them, but thats fine.
Maybe put a few music computers on the main network for a trial basis to show it runs just as good, and then scrap the dedicated network, unless you've got the money and staffing to upgrade and support it

7th April 2011, 08:19 AM #5 we're planning on giving them some fairly old PC's and linking them all to a NAS or whatnot to store their files on, but other than that they'll be stand alone.

7th April 2011, 09:16 AM #6 our music dept is also on our standard network .
We run Cubasis ( Cubase old version ) Audacity and Sibelius
All seems to run fine . Does help the machines having dedicated Sound cards
soundblaster and the keyboards work well together

7th April 2011, 11:42 AM #7 Ditto - all on standard network with everything else. Suite of iMacs running Cubase Studio 4 & 5 + Garageband, and an X-Server for their storage, all connected to same switch.
