On a serious note, quite a few of the older navy ships have been recomissioned in the Australian navy, and I believe a number again with some of the asian countries. I think India picked up a good few of them.

But I suspect we'll see it bought by some private entity with too much money, and it will be made to turn cheap tricks.

How about an "anything goes" party boat that can sail out to international waters?

Despite the fact that we invented the thing (and a lot of other carrier technology we no longer use) the last carrier we had with that facility was HMS Hermes. We sold it to India very soon after it returned from the Falklands in 1982!

One of our plumbers worked on the previous Ark Royal as a fitter on the catapults. He told some tales...

Scroll down the Wiki page and compare her to the Nimitz. We are not even playing the same game!

Not necessarily! I shall have to find a link later but I believe the plan is to commission HMS Queen Elizabeth but it will only carry helicopters so no catapult system will be installed. This will (possibly) be fitted to HMS Prince of wales when it enters service, at which point HMS Queen Elizabeth will be mothballed and possibly sold.

    * Found one source: http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/cvf/ "No catapult or arresters will be fitted in the initial build but the carrier will be built to accommodate a future back-fit. The carrier will be fitted with a steam catapult or electromagnetic launch system and arrester gear, if the option to convert the carrier to the conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) variant proceeds."

Indeed, however the government was also discussing dropping the F35-B and replacing it with the F35-C, which would need the CATOBAR system.

So, it all depends on what they decide in the end!

The last RN carrier to have a steam catapult was the previous Ark. Hermes had hers removed in the early 70s when she was converted to a commando carrier and only used for helicopters. Hermes was in service with the RN until 1984 and paid off in 85. She was then sold to the Indian navy in 1986 and commisioned as the INS Viraat in 1989.

Never served in the Ark myself, but a have lot of mates who did. Shame she has to go, and very shortsighted if you ask me!
