I thought the gravitational pull of the moon affected tides? If that is the case, then surely being closer to the earth, the moon's pull will be greater than normal?

Yes, you end up with slightly higher high tides, and slightly lower low tides. Not exactly going to cause the world to explode. There are many people on the net claiming that events like this are going to be caused by the moon being closer than normal. That is where there is no scientific evidence.

Some scary stuff going on there. BBC footage of the wave shows it marching on relentlessly. Then there are people merrily going along a road, seeing the wave and doing a three point turn to get the hell out of there!

Japan is lit up with warning symbols. Been a lot of quakes, recent ones have occurred at about 11.30 and just after midnight at about 5.1 magnititude.

Watching Russia Today this morning, turned it on to be greeted by reactor 1 exploding!
Keep tabs on this, looks like this story will dominate the news for a while if it goes into emltdown and causes massive radioactive poisoning of the area around it. This is turning into Chernobyl 2 and more reactors are indicating leaks after the earthquake.

I've been watching Russia Today too, in fact I tend to watch it more than BBC and Sky news. It doesn't focus on the "Brit missing in Tsunami" side of things. As if the lives of the thousands of Japanese are not as important as that of a fellow Brit.
