Hadn't Noticed This About Our Coinage Until I Saw This Picture

I had noticed that there were partial designs of the coins it just didn't occur to me that the pattern would come together like this.

    Nice.

    You got there eventually then!

I agree that it's a nice bit of design though

Those who know me would probably say that being observant [about little details like this] is not my strongest attribute.

The daft thing about these newer coins is that they display the value in English letters rather than a a number. For example on the old coins there was a big 2 on the new ones it says two pence.

So any visitors to the coutry who can't read English won't know the value of the coin.

I've got a set of the new coins stuck to my wall in the right shape. I did have a pound coin next to it as well, but I must have borrowed this at some point when I was short of cash.

Quite sadly I've also collected a complete set from 2008, 2009 and most of a 2010 set - (need a 50p and £1 to coomplete)

Cool! Next mission: try to convince someone that they're worth more as a complete set.

I take your point but I don't know how much it really matters - the vast majority of visitors to the UK can read a reasonable amount of English. It's always vaguely depressing to leave here and find that pretty much everyone else speaks English while I struggle to do more than "please" and "thank you" in their native tongue!

Another interesting thing about coinage - I hadnt realised how many fake £1 coins there are in circulation. I was with some friends the other day and between the 6 of us we had 5 fakes. You could tell because the picture on the obverse and reverse didnt line up, or the edge wasnt 'toothed' enough. Some of them were lighter too, but not all.

They're just trying to show you that 88 pence makes a pound - quantitative easing at it's most subtle !

I have been told that you can tell the difference between a fake a real £1 coin by the way it bounces. Never tried it thou

    are these new coins?

Just checked all the UK coins i have with me and none of them match those designs... They all have some random womans head on one side, and various other designs on the flip.

When I worked for GPT (Marconi) payphone div, we had to deal with fake coins all the time.(slugs we called them).
Some of them were very good fakes indeed. I amzaes me how the mechanism can detect fake coins quite well. (they have a hall effect detector as well as weight etc). The software programmers ahd to program in the parameters for every new set that came out as they were subtle differences.

My first proper job was in the Royal Mint Coin Club inputting collector coin orders onto their system. Great fun........
Second job was sat on a line packing Hong Kong coins into collector sets......... Even less fun!
