Filling Skill Gaps
I've been working in a school in a tech/admin hybrid role for about 2 years, 3 if you include a whole year only as a tech. Primarily it deals with supporting SIMS, keeping it running and helping staff when it falls over along with other Office related assistance and data management.
Sounds good on paper but it also means I lack server and network management experience beyond my very ad-hoc home network. Another area does that and makes me hesitant to apply for any tech jobs such as Network Manager or Senior Tech to try get a higher paid job. The most experience I have is a bit of monitoring on the SIMS server with MMC and Remote Desktop, which I cant go too crazy on as the LA technically own and run it. If I take that thing down by accident I will be in very hot water...
So how do you fill key skill gaps such as backups and GPO's when another department does it?

Have you considered applying for jobs as a SIMS / Data Manager, it seems there plenty of jobs where you work alongside a NM and they pay just as well if not better.

I've been looking at the data manager jobs, though I must be missing a lot of them. Wouldn't last 2 minutes in Saudi Arabia though.
