    ah, yup.
    Get with the picture little-miss
Just a little civil unrest: BBC News - Egypt: Mubarak sacks cabinet and defends security role
    BBC News - Egypt unrest

It's the kind of thing you'd expect in china, pretty shocking.

I can see that they could so easily do that here too, we have government controlled country level filtering, so they could just black list all sites, and effectively cut us off from everything if they wanted to stop internal comms.

    Oh..

OK... do you think we can have their IPv4 addresses back if they're not using them?

[We're apparently at that historic moment when IANA have no more left to hand out - few days or weeks subject to a bit of bureacracy]

The shocking thing is that the USA enacted provisions into law to be able to do the exact same thing, at the word of their president. Not to mention Australia disabled mobile phone connectivity for a radius around his motorcade when Bush traveled their.

And I'm pretty sure the UK could do it under its laws too.

Its appalling that a 'leader' thinks it acceptable to do it really. Hopefully he'll step aside and realise that he is not representing the people. I fear he won't though, and it'll end up with even more violence.

We've a Tunis office, and they quite regularly just have the internet turned off, no warning or anything - it makes for some interesting support calls..

On a more relevant note, the outcry of twitter users about this was quite something - except of course no one in egypt can see them

And do you know that Vodafone Egypt turned their services off as well at the behest of the Egyptian government? Disgraceful.

I thought the whole point of the internet and how things were routed was that that kind of thing couldn't happen?

Well, the issue is that the fibres and ISPs connecting Egypt to the net are few in number, and therefore only take a small amount of effort to disable.

It all has to route through points that are maintained/administered by the baddies. Unless people have a satellite connection, they're offline.

In the UK all our data pass by GCHQ eyes... maybe not as foreceful but it's still in place.

    Oppressive government limits freedoms shocker.

Had armed guard escorts just to travel between sharm and luxor a few years back. Got a nice picture of a loaded AK just sitting on the front seat of our car. Scarest moment was the guards at cairo after taking a picture asked for money with one hand on their pistol.

    EDIT: 1k posts! woot.

It happens more than people care to think. On 7/7 all mobile networks in the UK were disabled (apart from emergency services calls) to prevent remote detonation of devices.
