Anyone remember CD servers? We had an ancient old SCSI one when I first started, it had an accident with a skip shortly afterwards.

Also have a never used £2.5k video conferencing kit.

And wireless isn't so great here, the building is a perfect reflector, steel frame, reinforced concrete floors, I get bumped down to 11Mb after one wall!

omg lol ive still got an Atlantis(?) CD server (still working i believe) in the corner of the server room, not plugged in of course...

I would set up a jukebox, but with MP3s and large cheap storage available it isn't worth the hassle.

Sure it's not an Avantis one? I've got one of them under my desk right now that got decomissioned when I upgraded the Computing network to 2k from NT. It was actually quicker to incorporate the software into the Ghost image than it was to get the sodding thing working properly. In fact, the only reason I haven't thrown it out is cos I can't be bothered to shift it (it's making a useful platform for the server's UPS).

I think the English department still have an old RM NT4 server in a monolithic tower case, although I don't think it actually works, and someone's lost the keys to the front panel too.

Heh! I had one of those in my first school. They paid £1400 for a cheap hard drive and motherboard, and you had to let the kids 'see' the drive for them to use it (very old type on Win 95) total pap and a waste of cash.

Yep, that sounds about right for an Avantis box.

If only they were all at the bottom of the sea . They still turn up at BETT amazingly - Who is still willing to pay serious cash for a fileserver to hold ISO images?

    Ecologs

Our cluster bought some a few years ago and ran a project together.

The hardware is the most unfriendly I've ever come across.

One button does everthing and one red led is the only user feedback as to what is happening .

Oh and the unit flattens the batteries when not being used so you have to take them out after each use

They persevered through the project but now they languish on the shelves.

    regards

    Simon

I remember avantis...my previous school had a non avantis CD tower server, which was slow but solid. Then they bought an Avantis CDServe to supplement it...bag of...spanners.

Oxford Childrens Encyclopedia hated it, and I learned to hate the entire setup. Wouldn't mind an old one now for a laugh though..can they be reused as cheap NAS style storage?

As to videoconferencers...I know we have a polyspan unit sat in the old suite..used twice in 5 years. Nice unit..but nobody seems to use them anymore!

Another one..flowgo's. We have several, unused. Yet. One day, maybe.
