That raises another good point, if their paying for their own machine, I suppose an AUP is out of the question? On the plus side, so is any requirement to remove the shed load of viruses they get themselves infected with (unless they're willing to pay a fee of course )

On the issue of cost, you could just say it is a pound a day bonus for a year, so they may well write it off. Or have a year long contract minimum so they can't scuttle off. I guess in the end is it cost effective taking into account the freedom it creates for users and the time it frees techs up for.

Yes - and they're not expected to bring it in to work or anything, their computer is theirs. The school has no legal liability involved in anything to do with that PC, they just need to provide web / remote access of some sort. Everyone gets £300 every 5 years to buy computer equipment - if they already have a PC that's fine. You could make this a nationally-tracked scheme of some kind if you wanted to be sure people moving jobs only got the money every 5 years.
