Ligaments have more strength than muscles, and as the bone is barely shielded its like taking large pliers to someone, but with less force.

Nonsense. How else would you be able to flex your fingers?

Mind you, if you've no muscles in your fingers maybe research is too difficult - it must take you ages just to cut & paste.

You flex your fingers with the muscles in your hand!

"One could say that there are actually thousands of muscles in each finger, if you include the tiny muscles that cause your hairs to stand up, or your blood vessels to contract. "

    From the QI/quibbles page!

Pointing the Finger at QI - The Qibble Blog

I was going to de-cry the fact too...until I read further!

    Nephilims fact is correct!

No, the proximal ends of the flexors insert into the finger phalanges. That makes them as much muscles of the fingers as of the hand. I stand by my post.

Taken from Yahoo answers....and if a med student is wrong, then where does that leave the rest of us?

well, to be technical, the muscles aren't actually in the fingers. all of the muscles that move your fingers are in your hands and forearms. they have long tendons that extend down into the fingers and attach at different points above and below the joints. so, no, you don't actually have muscles in your fingers.

OK, if you are going to question that, how about this...

Fact #48a: The strongest muscle in the human body (pound for pound) is the Uterus. When giving birth, it gives off the equivalent energy of a modern day long bow, the closest muscle there after pound for pound is the heart, then the quadriceps, then the tongue.

neph has been on QI quibbles, then!!!

A commonly seen factoid on the net says that the tongue is the strongest muscle in the human body. This is completely wrong, no matter what definition of "strongest" one uses. The strongest muscle will actually be the largest (which means it's either your gluteus maximus or the quadriceps in your thigh) or the one that can exert most pressure on an object which means it's your jaw muscle. A strong case though can be made for the uterus, which is probably the strongest "pound for pound", it weighs around a kilogram, but during childbirth can exert a force equivalent to a modern longbow. Fact #49: In 2008 the British Army was called in to investigate a suspicous package and so they blew it up in a controlled explosion, only to discover that it was a parcel containing leaflets on how to deal with suspicious packages.

Fact #51: The most boring place in Great Britain is a field outside Ousefleet, near Scunthorpe, according to the 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey map. It is the blankest square kilometre in the country, with only part of an electricity pylon in it.
