I don't understand how it can be claimed as 'theft'. He lost the money, no one has stole it.

If you find something and don't hand it in to the police or return to owner, technically it's theft. I presume the idiot returned to the scene and surprise surprise it's missing. I hope the police are also investigating how he obtained £80k in cash and that the Inland Revenue are taking an interest.

If you can forget that theres £80K on the roof of your car then you must have too much.

I once left a laptop on my roof and drove about 5 miles or so - up and down hills.
    It surprisingly just stayed there.

Wow, you were very lucky! My old boss did a similar thing with a bag full of networking tools. When he braked at the first set of traffic lights it flew off and hit the car in front.

If you find something you are supposed to take "reasonable steps" to find the owner. If it is not reasonable to find the owner you can keep it.

In the case of £80,000, it is such a large amount of money it is reasonable and practical to hand it in / find the owner. The same could be said for a wallet that has forms of ID in it.

However for £5 it may be impractical or too difficult for a reasonable person to locate the owner.

Yes but you are rather stupid to have £80K in cash in the UK you could use wire transfer.

I left my mobile phone on the roof when I was in Coventry. When I got home my son asked me if I had my phone and it was then I had the sinking feeling as I realised what I had done. He then handed me my phone. Someone had found it and called him from the addressbook. It happened he was coming our way and dropped it in. My son didn't think to ask for his details so I could thank him.

The guy was a pensioner who had no trust in banks (don't blame him to be totally honest).

    Forgetfulness comes with age though...

I once drove from Asda to my house across Bristol with a 24 pack of Carling on the roof. Was still there when I got back.

I drank away all the stupid shortly after.
