    Student with Tourettes

    Hiya,

We have three students with varying degrees of Tourettes Syndrome here. One of them has recently taken to throwing things involuntarily, including computer mice.

We are wondering about giving him a laptop of some sort, the theory being it takes a lot more to pick up and throw so is unable to be such a rapid movement, however if we're wrong some poor little 11 year old could go home with a rather nasty headache - if we're lucky! A proper sized laptop is less likely to be thrown than a netbook, but our netbooks are all insured.

Does anyone else have any experience of dealing with students like this and if so, what has worked for them in the past?

    Thank you

    Stuart

I wouldn't recommend a laptop but would look at using one of the keyboards with the pc that has an integrated trackpad and do away with the separate mouse. The keyboard could be attached to the desk using velcro - I've done this at a charity I support and we also use them at my school.

The keyboard I use is a Keysonic which is a bit small but there are bigger alternatives. It's wireless so there are no cables to worry about.

I have worked with one bloke (many moons ago) who had the problem of throwing pens. He doesn't know he is lifting his arm at all but he did teach himself to spot when the pen wasn't touching the paper anymore and so he used his other hand to grab his arm. There were still occasions when he did throw the pen at people but secretly he told us that this was usually when he chose not to try and stop himself because he didn't like the person it was likely to hit.

There are groups that specialise in this so I hesitate to say what would and wouldn't work. The best people to speak with are the local occupational health team, which the school should already have some contact with. If he is showing more twitches during IT lessons it can be a sign of stress so this needs to be raised with the SEN staff anyway.

We had a student here who found it difficult to control her arm movements because of tourettes. The main problem wasn't just throwing but also a bashing motion.

We bought some rubber folding keyboards like these BLACK FLEXIBLE FOLDABLE SILICONE USB / PS2 KEYBOARD UK: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

They are usb so a TA or one of her friends would just plug it in.
