I actually have a spare charger at work specifically for charging my phone. I also charge my personal laptop at work as well on the odd ocassion I bring it in, never thought twice about it to be honest.

If you are charging via USB from a PC then the PC is on anyway so you are not using more electricity?

Well yes, you are using the power from the USB port which wasn't being used prior to plugging your phone in, so those 5v have to come from somewhere. It doesn't say to the processor "i'm taking 5v from your supply so deal with it". It says to the PSU "I need 5v, give me it now!" to which the PSU happily responds and pulls a bit more power to supply it.

I have no idea why anyone would even remotely give a damn. Get real, seriously. OH NOES 0.2p, Time to sack staff for theft and send the bailiffs over.
If you're worried about this, what about the work time you wasted posting/reading this thread?

*edit: sorry about the aggression, three hours of sleep makes for a ratty guy :P

ISTR sometime ago, and employer of the scale of BBC/British Airways having a fight with staff over this, but can't remember the details.

I do charge my phone at work occasionally (like now!), equally occasionally use it for work, and I also bring in tools to make my life easier. For example, I know my Bosch router (wood cutting) so I use that over the nominally better Elu that the department has. Am I really loosing anything by that deal? I doubt it really.

The only wrist slapping we get here for using chargers for mobile phones, etc is if we haven't had them PAT tested first. All mains electrical equipment, including phone chargers, must be tested before it can be used in school. The caretaker does it and, as the school is small, it's simple to arrange here.

Mine is on charge through USB. Do I care? No! I've switched a light off to compensate.

I think you're reading into the seriousness of this thread a little too much.

OT but my Asda finally got ear plugs in stock again last night, resulting in my having a hasty drive down to buy ALL of them. Slept with ear plugs in for the first time in weeks last night, and boy did I sleep like a log!

It's not noisy in my house - I'm just a very light sleeper and any noise (even the wind) wakes me up

My personal phone = also my work phone, i see no guilt

The phone they wanted to give me as my work phone looked like it came off the arc along with moses and his animals, no one rings me apart from my manager anyway so it's all good

Actually, kettles is the one thing where an employer could complain. The radio probably draws just a few milliamps of current but the kettle doesn't - they're typically 10A and if lots of people are boiling lots of kettles then it all adds up (and electricity is wasted because people will put more than just a cup of water in the kettle so you heat up all the water you're not going to use that time, let it cool and heat it up again later!)

It may not matter - if the alternative is someone stopping work for 15 minutes to go somewhere central to have a cup of tea then the penny it costs to boil the kettle is no big deal.

If you think management is looking for reasons to get at you then I'd ask "is it OK to ..." - that way you're covered.
