Cool i got taken to the heads office today

on my way out of the door today the head asked me to come to his office......

.... to tell me im very valued and highly thought of and he doesnt want me to leave.

    the back story:

i didnt get the job id been doing for the last year and i have let it be know that i maybe starting to look for other jobs, as i dont have many prospects here now. only raise in pay will be yearly increments. gotta play the game now to see if i can get more money!

all in all a very happy bunny!

Yeah - that'd make me stick around..... not! I'd be fuming if my head said "you are valuable and we don't want you to leave. money? extra? don't think so mate"

Sounds like salt in the wound to me, a bit like "you are valuable to us, but not enough to earn more". I'd still be looking elsewhere

I'm with hightower, the comment, whilst sounds good, is just a sweetener to try and make you stay a little while longer, and will keep happening as long as you let it.

Words are always cheaper than a pay-rise or regrading. See if you can find out how 'valued' you are compared to your peers in schools near you; if you are less valued, you might want to point it out to your HT.

But how appreciated is he/she exactly? As Broc says - words are cheap. "I love you little-miss", easy as pie but doesn't mean jack all to you now does it?

Sounds like 'Jam tomorrow' to me. I'm a teacher but I've been on the receiving end of similar flannel from a head teacher. I've never yet met a head teacher who didn't have some fundamental character flaw; they're all full of BS.

Why didnt you get the job you've been doing for a year? That might shed light on why the head felt it necessary to say what he did (for example, if he wanted to employ the op but was overruled?)

    But *everyone* loves little-miss ...

As much as not getting the job sucks and wanting to do more with the skills, etc you have got is good ... there is nothing wrong with a boss saying "I think you are good and I respect your skills" ... as long as they mean it. If you go to them and say "x, y and z need to be done" and they believe you and follow your advice .. then yes, those words do mean a lot. If they are simple platitudes then take them for what they are ... a comment you can take or leave.

Don't get wound up about it or anything ... just be glad you got something and that you are not in the position which a number of regulars have been in, where they can hardly have a civil word with the Head. Make the most of what you have got.

    Fair point.

I wasn't trying to put a dampner on the 'good news' the OP had received. Just trying to explain that if it was me I'd still be pretty miffed, probably more miffed than before. But yes, I did pull the rug rather quickly.
