Keith Brown has an extensive MySQL tutorial section on his website (inlcluding basic *nix web server configuration).

If it's MSSQL you are wanting to learn, you may as well learn the environment too - download the SQL Server Express edition. The GUI is very helpful when setting out.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/

You can also download example databases: (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en) although I have never used them . . . .

@theriver
Why limit yourself to one technology ? You don't need to learn 'the environment' to learn SQL. It is clearly more wise to able to implement technology on a variety of platforms. The same with scripting, why learn to do something that is only applicable to one platform (that will get outdated very quickly) when you could learn a competing, and often more robust technology that enables you to use it on a variety of platforms - far more logical and better transferable skills IMO.

yep, including windows, naturally I prefer OSS stuff, tends to be better for *all* O/S's - another new reactionary scripting language is scheduled for vista sp1 - mid 2007
