Interesting convo last night. People reconned that Vista wil be known as the DRM O/S - the O/S that stood for the individual having no rights over what they do with their computers.
This is the opposite view of joe public who currently thinks Vista is out to protect him more.
I can see a big swing over to the alternatives following this release.

Ultimate Edition on my machine here and using Business on my Laptop. Both are very good, theres many things such as better deployment options with Vista, which will no doubt become more apparant as we use them more and get great books by Mark Minasi etc...
Gecko, I won't rub in and say I have that, well the 360, but no perfect dark

Re: what is so good about vista
I've just had a thought. Our school is almost certain to merge with another into a city academy in a few years time. Yes, my job is safe but we will end up with nice shiny new computers. And I wonder if anyone can guess what will be on them?
Looks like I better order that copy of vista now and get started! When does the next version of MS server come out?

-=just a though=-
If your job is being Tupe'd to a to a BSF IT company who decide to change the ICT infrastructure - including the operating systems, then they will be obliged to provide training for you and the rest of the staff. Unless they are a completely shoddy company, they are not likely to pay hundreds of thousands on equipment/software and throw teachers/techs in at the deep end - if they did, a technician could just sit on his *rse all day long and not do any work - but never receive a disiplinary because s/he hadn't been trained in the job.

I am going to do everything I can to ensure that does not happen. I plan to see what the guys in the other school plan to do ie are they going to stay with the academy...and then working with them have a definate input on network infrastructure and hardware/software solutions before it goes pearshaped with some IT firm going mad and providing totally wrong infrastructures for the purpose of education.

Secure? I should mention that Vista is vulnerable to 39.7% of all malware currently in circulation, despite microsofts claim that vista doesn't need antivirus !

Jim's really regretting that statement now as it keeps coming back and biting them in the rear end. The key phrase in that statement is LOCKED DOWN, IE he was a fully limited user, no chance of running anything as an administrator, had very limited C drive access and had Parent Controls turned on and set to the strictest setting. Its only like having a well setup GPO set and profile as I bet you could run it in a Primary school with no antivirus and be ok.

Teletubby land was vanished to the bin ages ago in Alpha releases Craig, we all hated it and as a result its gone and forgotten.

Re: what is so good about vista
Is it now possible with Vista to switch users on a domain machine?
On XP Pro you could only do this off domain. Microsoft said this was because of the need to display usernames on the logon screen like XP Home. Funnilly enough there was a beta build of XP SP2 where it temporarily possible.

I am fairly sure that you can hot swap on the domain now, infact I am 98% sure you can as it does display usernames on the screen so you can select.
