I would say approximately 120 absolute maximum.

The last time I looked the bottom had fallen out of the second hand laptop market completely - after they became available free with wireless broadband contracts etc.

My normal rule of thumb is half the price of a new machine with similar spec if its less than 2 years old.

50 after that because it it goes wrong -(screen for instance) the buyer will basically have to throw it away

Thats after I tell people not to buy 2nd hand laptops

    regards

    Simon

I would agree 120-130, but this would depend on the condition and whether it includes an AC adapter. Small things but they make all the difference.

I'd pay 120 but I think you could get 160+ on ebay.

Also Make / Model will make a difference.

@ Si Nothing wrong with used laptops if you choose wisely.

Check eBay for similar laptops, see how much they are going for. Bear in mind that the price you would pay on eBay includes eBay's and/or PayPal's commission and postage charges, so the price someone would pay you in cash would be a bit less.

How can you choose wisely - its just a lottery once its out of guarantee

    I don't gamble using 100-200 on anything

I'd agree second hand laptops are a gamble.

I bought a Dell back in late 2004 from eBay. It was a fairly awful spec, but for the time the second hand laptop market was at it's height.

I paid 240 for it, straight out of University, that was just about all the money we had.

The board fried within two weeks, and the buyer refused to do anything - it was sold as seen, which is why it was a good 50 less than the rest.

I've learnt my lesson on this!

It is not a gamble if you go with what you know. For example my school have a couple of C series Latitudes that are 8 years old They have spec that would put a netbook to shame. I have no doubt they will just keep on going.

To be fair to the seller with it being sold as seen, and working when it arrived to you - it's not really their fault is it. I wouldn't have done anything either if I were the seller.

Always reminds me of a few years ago when I bought an old car for 200, in a complete state. I spent ages fixing it up and making it run and sold it for nearly 1400. A couple of weeks later the guy I bought it off came to me and said I had ripped him off as I had sold it for much more than I bought it for. He soon got told to "go away"!

I never made out it was their fault. However back in naive days I didn't quite twig on a) A lot less money than comparable models and b) Sold as seen could be seen as a possible problem machine.

Anyway long story short, that particular model Latitude was well know for the faults that killed mine.

No sorry I apologise if that's how my post sounded - it was in no way aimed at you directly. I completely understand just how frustrating it must have been, especially being a student with little money - we've all been there!
