I have seen portable cameras which have motion detection built in, so this can save having hours of video with nothing to see. Typically they're used in bird boxes, but should be suitable for a cage too.

I've had some webcams off eBay, but found they had driver software that pops up annoying messages ("web cam is plugged in", "web cam is now recording") the whole time. The £8 (no microphone) or £10 (with microphone) cameras from Currys / PC World work great, though - plug them into the single USB port, away you go.
