    I doubt that there will be much life left on the planet once the human race is killed off.

    Actually current thinking is that the recovery would be surprisingly rapid. I will try to find a relevant link.

    However in the meantime perhaps someone else remembers a [BBC?] program on the subject which imagined the world where humans suddenly disappeared overnight and what would happen to cities and the world in general?

    It might be, but it won't start until we get wiped out. By then it might be too late.

    The basis of "The World Without Us" is that we disappear overnight, however we are likely to go down fighting, using any available resource until it is all but totally depleted.
