On Christmas Day, for the first time ever, customers purchased more Kindle books than physical books.
As who is going to buy a physical book on Christmas Day but if you have a kindle with nothing to read....
propably should be a "no sh!t Sherlock" moment

theres always folk who will pirate.. but just like people download movies, the cinemas keep smashing box office records..
also, heres a question.. if i can go to my library and borrow a book for free and read it, hows it any different from reading it for free on a 'free' ebook i downloaded?
Do librarys pay a yearly license or something like radio stations and shops do for playing music?

No mention of piracy. Lots of old books are freely available for download now. Think it's called the Gettysburg project.

Project Gutenberg digitises out of copyright works. It's the main place I get ebooks from, as I think the cost of them is ridiculous. Must say, that as many phones (what I use), virtually all PDAs and (I think) various i-devices allow you to read ebooks, I can't see the point in buying a separate reader.

I reckon electronic readers will really take off when they're good enough to read (quality) newspapers on - think how convenient that would be - no more presses, distribution, paper boys, waste papers - just your newspaper delivered immediately - I've tried reading them on the web - OK for short bits - but no fun for reading serious articles...

5th January 2010, 11:11 AM #7 This thread is heresy. You should all be burnt at the stake with with your 'e-readers'. Nothing beats the feel of turning real paper and watching a bookmark descend deeper into the book.
Besides, whats the use of clearing the rainforest if you haven't got a new Jackie Collins paperback to show for it?

I enjoy paper books too. But I couldnt find a paper back of the new dan brown book. Only that massive bible sized hardback. Hardly suitable for reading on the bus. In the end it took me over a month to read it as I only read a few chapters on a saturday sitting on my balcony in the sunshine

5th January 2010, 01:20 PM #10 I can see ebooks becoming a big thing in schools in the coming years. It makes sense from a 'resources' point of view.
