There are a load of old school friends which I added when I first signed up, who are incredibly annoying and boring, need to delete them but a bit worried some will notice and ask why (even though we never talk)

Just filter them out so you don't get updates from them and put them in a group that makes you look like nothing ever changes they'll soon get board. Or delete them I deleted loads of people that I don't really know and they never notice.

Bah! I hate those people espcially when facebook has the phonebook feature (Friends [Top Nav Bar]t -> Phone book [Left Menu]) which most people have filled in already.

I'm on there, but fairly locked down (I can be found by searching, but having a very common name keeps me largely hidden); useful for keeping in touch with friends who don't live near me, especially family in Brazil and USA. No former school friends on my list, only current, real friends.

I have blocked all "updates" from FarmVille and such like (a nice feature they added recently), mainly because one friend has about a hundred virtual fish tanks so that she doesn't have to buy her son a real one and I found I lost sight of real updates amidst the notifications that she'd fed them or cleaned the tank.

I also have a bad Bejeweled Blitz addition!

I have a chronic addiction to Mafia Wars. I've started to use bots in the hope they'll ban me and I can be cured that way!

Oh, me too. I really don't care if someone has found a cow! Fishville has been blocked too.

What surprised me more was my teenage son doing likewise after I said I'd done it. He doesn't play the games and was getting tired of all the notifications and invites too!

I find it useful for keeping in contact with friends and family and its quite handy having it all in one place.

Another great thing about it is organising social activities using the events applications.

So much easier than sending out multiple txts to everyone.

I regularly have facebook culls though and i'm not one of those people who claim to have 500 friends.

I hate the applications on there like vampires, throwing sheep; i find it a load of nonsense.

I cant believe how thick some people are though.

    Duh!

It's kind of social leprosy not to be on facebook these days
but It is easy to become information overloaded if you don't control it. For instance the easiest way to eradicate application spam is to make the status only filter the default view on home.

    Nonsense!

I'd say not being on Facebook means you have to work on your friendships in the real world... which is better.

Using social networking sites keeps you in contact with more people but in my experience the quality of contact can be severely diminished.

I'd rather have a smaller circle of friends and actually socialise with them than have a large circle that I keep track of via the internet.
