England match only on the internet
BBC SPORT | Football | Internationals | England match to be internet only
Now I'm no great footy fan, but share house with those who are.
Our internet connection speed is cr@p at the best of times (about 1 Meg at best) and if lots of people watch this game, it'll be worse.
OH says he won't pay a fiver to see a match in fits and starts...
Looks like our router won't be on that night.
Anyone for ludo?!

To be honest your 1Mbps connection is easily enough bandwidth to stream youtube-like content. The bottleneck will be the company streaming the content. They're going to need a beast of a network infrastructure and servers to stream to potentially millions of viewers.
Is it commercially viable like the article says? I think people will pay just to experience what it's like (this one time) and depending on that experience will directly influence decisions people make in future.
What made me laugh is some of the stereotypical comments some idiots made on the news. They made it sound we're still using 14" CRTs for computer screens. They've clearly never heard of youtube, BBCi Player and 4oD which millions of people watch every week. A typical program can easily be 30 minutes, so watching a first half of 45 minutes isn't so unrealistic.
I have a feeling the television boffins don't like the fact advertising trends are changing. Why pay huge sums upfront when you can pay in much smaller chunks online?

Not forgetting the UK broadband "infrastructure"... That's precisely the reason why I can't see TV-over-the-Internet working at the moment.

6th October 2009, 08:40 AM #9 Luckily this match is pretty meaningless from an England point of view as we've already qualified.
I can't see the pubs being too impressed though, as this doesn't appear to be available to them to show.

6th October 2009, 09:04 AM #10 thats the thing, its meaningless, hence why only this company got the game, bbc/itv knew there would be little interest in it
£4.99 is bad enough, on the day they're charging £11.99!!! I wouldnt pay that to watch any football game ever on TV, internet, anything.
Not sure who in their right mind a) wants to watch it b) is stupid enough to pay a fiver
Hope the company loses out big time on this. They're taking the p1ss with the prices

6th October 2009, 09:23 AM #11 You could always try myp2p.eu or something such like that as they always have every premier league game available and other sports. They use specific software such as sopcast and also media player via the web for live sports.
I would and do pay for my sports but i can't help it when they don't always show all the games.

6th October 2009, 09:35 AM #12 I refuse to pay for any type of streamed content full stop, just as well the game doesn't really matter and tbh the highlights will suffice.
I hope someone restreams it elsewhere, no international game should ever be charged for... end

It won't be available in pubs, but some cinemas will be showing the game... at a price and you'll need to smuggle your own popcorn in to avoid being fleeced for that!
BTW the £5 price is only if you book your internet screening of the game now... if you wait until match day it's something like £15!
EDIT Checked... it's £11.99 on match day
