Network Managers and their staff
I'm Network Manager for a secondary school. approx 1050 students, 460 ish PC's running Server 2003 (in a VMWare ESX enviroment) and Windows XP (Mix of thin client / VM and thick clients).
Staffing is an issue at the moment with us, or lack of it
Would be interested in knowing what the staffing is like in other secondary schools of the same sort of size (Network Manager, Technicians etc....)

At our School we have around 1,100 Students around 100-150 Staff - around 650 Desktops and around 70 Laptops
1x Assis NM
there really is on three of us.. i cant really say too much.. someone is very slack put it that way lol
We cope very well though, considering we have just built the network from scratch, and are having to also fully develop a Learning Platform.

I guess a solid number estimation of approaching 2000 users managed by 3 techs and 1 NM wouldn't be too far gone here.
Plenty of devices to help those users learn too..

1,400-ish students, 150-200 staff.
1x IT Manager
2x Snr IT Techs
2x Jnr IT Techs
There is no 'NM' - not really, the duties of an NM are split between the 2 senior techs.
Running Server 2003 R2, 2008, Hyper-V. Windows XP SP3. 700 PCs tops - around 60 of those are laptops and 20 netbooks.

About 1050 students, 80-100 staff. Around 450ish desktops and laptops.
Just moved to a brand new fully virtualised (on Citrix XenServer) Windows Server 2008 R2 domain with XP clients.
It's just me (the Network Manager) and my assistant. He only moved from being part time to full time at the start of July as well!

1200 students - 500 workstations, 200 student laptops - a heck of a lot of other IT kit, very IT-centric school.
1 IT Manager, 1 Senior Tech, 1 Tech.

Secondary school with about 410 students, and around 80 staff.
We have around 550 machines - yes that's more machines than we have students. We have an extremely large quantity of laptops - about 2/3 of our machines are laptops, only around 130 desktop PCs.
There's 3 of us - myself as Network Manager and 2 very good techs. Very hard work at the moment, as we've just rebuilt the domain and moved away from RMCC3 as well as setting up our new Business and enterprise area at the same time. We are now at the troubleshooting stage where the kids have come back and nothing's working quite the way it was planned to, although so far no major problems which is good

This thread is a repitition of about 5 others i've seen.
Becta recommends I beleive around...
1:150 for a badly run school
1:300 for the best run school
By best and worst I mean tools used to support the job. Like remote support, imaging, knowledge bases etc etc.... If you want to see roughly how 'well' your team is doing can I suggest you go on the becta sight and download the FITS assessment spreadsheet.
edit: a quick forum search reveals this..
Sensible level of technical support
How many ICT Technicians at your School???
Ratio of techs to equipment
How many technical Staff do you have ?
Technicians per PC ratio gudielines?
