Teacher held after boy attacked
All Saints' Roman Catholic School, Mansfield.
Police were at the school gates on Thursday morning
A teacher has been held by police on suspicion of assaulting a 14-year-old boy at a school in Nottinghamshire.
The boy suffered a serious head injury in the alleged attack, police said.
The pupil became involved in the incident at All Saints' Roman Catholic School in Broomhill Lane, Mansfield, at about 1100 BST on Wednesday.
He was taken to King's Mill Hospital but transferred to Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) in Nottingham where his condition is described as very serious.
The school has declined to comment "at this time".
A police spokeswoman said the boy's family had asked for privacy.
Performing arts
The spokeswoman said a 49-year-old man had been arrested and remained in police custody.
"The police investigation is being led by Det Supt Adrian Pearson, with specialist officers from the public protection unit," she said.
"They are working with the head teacher and staff at All Saints' Roman Catholic School."
All Saints' School opened in 1974 and has 1,170 pupils on the roll, including a sixth form of 200 along with a teaching staff of more than 70.
The school, a specialist performing arts college since 2002, describes itself on its website as, "a lively, Catholic comprehensive school with a very special, warm ethos which is recognised by all who visit."
In a statement Nottinghamshire County Council said: "An incident involving a pupil at All Saints' School occurred. The student was injured and has been taken to hospital where he is receiving treatment. The parents of the pupil involved have been informed.
"The matter is currently being investigated and it would be inappropriate to make any further comment while the investigation is ongoing."

9th July 2009, 11:12 AM #3 The student apparently hit his head. Probably fell over. Teachers nowadays are too scared to touch students. I hope this student makes a full recovery but punishment needs to be tightened- bring back the cain.

Det Supt Adrian Pearson said a weapon was used and there were a "number of witnesses".
Yeh - but the weapo was used by who? The teacher or the pupil? I'll wager the pupil...

9th July 2009, 06:14 PM #15 Trouble is, we're all human. And young humans have the ability to push the older humans way over the edge. I have a tremendous respect for teachers that are able to control and gain respect from their pupils, and it doesn't surprise me to hear every now and then when one of these members of staff goes over the edge. I'm not condoning anything - noone is likely to know the full story, but it is almost certain it wasn't unprovoked.
