    IT Qualifications

    Hey!

Wonder if anyone can help? I'm currently having a dillema about what courses and qualifications to go for.

Basically I want to progress to Network or Database administration and need some help in the best route to get there.

    I currently have these qualifications:

    Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS)
    CompTia A+
    Microsoft Certified Application Specialist (MCAS)

Should I continue to get qualifications such as MCSA/MCSE or do a degree at uni? And if it's the uni route what course? Or even HNC/HND? Or should I go into more specialist areas such as SQL? Please help as theres so many routes to go down!

What do employers prefer? Or the best way of getting a job?

    Thanks
    Dan

If you're interested in Microsoft database administration you'd probably want to look at the MCDBA route - Microsoft Learning: Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA)

Networking, Cisco's probably your best bet. That's if you mean network administrator for the hardware side. The software side and general administration (if you're looking at Microsoft of course) you should look at the MCSE and the MCITP: EA.

If on the other hand you're interested in Linux, some Linux certification would help you. The commercial vendors have their own certs, and I believe there's also LP1 and LP2.

All depends what sort of job you want. Now's not the best time to be looking, I believe the only skills which are currently undersupplied are Sharepoint and .NET development.

If you want to keep your options more open, a degree's the way to go until you make some sort of decision about the area you prefer. And by the time you finish it hopefully the job market will have improved.

theres no direct equilivent but the mcitp:EA is the closest. It's not the same as the MCSE is cumulative but the EA basically doesn't test on the components building upto the exam. so you cna now gain mcse equilivent without having to do mcsa equilivent
