Don't worry, it's just the oil companies and the government screwing us again...

Oil price rise, we're at an 8-month high at the moment apparently, and, you know, any excuse to put petrol up:

    Brent Crude Oil Spot $/barrel

Think I saw an alarmist Mirror headline earlier in the week saying it would go up to 1.12/l for unleaded. Not impossible I suppose but it was the Mirror and it also said it was already over 1/l, which it isn't near me.

Luckily for me I'm starting a new job on the 22nd and my daily commute will go from 59 miles to less than 4.

It is also coming to the summer holiday season. Petrol always rises in price during the summer 'driving' months.

Yup I've noticed this as well, typical firms profiting out of summer holidays.

They've been putting it up slowly even when the petrol prices weren't rising again. Nobody noticed so they kept doing it... I doubt we'll ever go below 1 a litre by the end of 09.

On the up side it is forcing people to think twice about driving cars that use fuel like it's free. On the down side this is going to kill inflation wise. Bad times ahead.

Tax is obviously a huge part of the price paid at the pump but the increase in the price of crude oil is the main factor at the moment.

A barrel of oil is about 160 litres so using the numbers posted by AngryTechnician shows that the basic price of oil has gone from $0.26 per litre to $0.45 per litre. In the same time, the exchange rate has also altered so in rough terms oil has gone from 18p to 27p a litre; the increase at the pumps is pretty much in line with this so it doesn't look like anything particularly weird is going on.

As cookie_monster says, oil is a finite resource; there are arguments about how finite but it is going to run out. The sooner we can find a way of doing stuff without oil, the better our long term future!

there is an argument about ideas such as peak oil, and the finiteness, but those are question for many years down the line....

at the moment, the price of crude is, as always, speculation driven. And as you say reacting to the strength of the dollar, but again that's speculating and profiting from trading oil.

Yep. If we all lived closer to where we work we'd ease congestion and reduce our need for oil. When you've got it down to four miles you could cycle it in 20 minutes and do some good to your health at the same time!
