Default Power Consumption

Recently I was told by someone in a large organisation (they have 600 staff - local authority sector) that close on 30% of their energy cost is attributable to running their Information Technology systems. Anyone any idea if there is anyone working on schemes that aim to reduce energy use by IT systems please; if so can you point me in their direction?

There is a thread somewhere here showing that computer manufacturers are making PCs run quieter and use less electricity. Can't find it at the mo, but they weren't cheap.

typically 3 to 5 watts. Basically your average IT Suite will consume the same amount of power in 'standby' as a lightbulb.

The big power hog with PCs are CRT monitors. If you replace them with LCD panels you'll see sizeable savings in power requirements.

Replace with thin clients and you can do without all those fans and other moving bits. The lower heat output also means that you do not require [as much] air con and as a consequence save even more money

Good old TCO coming into play again :P
