H&S Display Screen Equipment
Hi, I hope this is in the right place, I couldnt find a more relevant forum.
Myself and the other ICT Techie at our school have been asked to carry out DSE Risk Assesments on every machine on site, this has never been mentioned before in our 3+ years here
Altho we are confident in the quality of work on anything we've set up our concern is that we are both A+ certified and working on either MCSE or Cisco courses, neither of us have been on a course relating specifically to the health and safety of DSE and its regulations.
Are we in a position to complete these assesments and stick our names on the bottom?
The assesment mentions completion of an action plan once the workstation has been assesed, are we in a position to complete this?
We have no one in charge of H&S on site to ask.
Are we being over cautious or is this the norm?
Thank you.

12th May 2009, 03:11 PM #2 DSE Risk assessments need to be carried out by the user of the machine as they are specific to the user, e.g. helight of the monitor etc.

I was asked to complete the assessments for our lot. I photocopied the form and handed copies to users who warranted it.
Then it gets nailed up somewhere obvious near the assessed area so and visiting H&S bod can check it.
They may need your guidance on certain items, or ask for your help to make their areas meet the requirements, but that should be the limit of your involvement.
Oh, and I had the forms for nearly 6months, but didn't do them until my new wheely chair turned up

Thanks for the quick responses, thats exactly the info i needed.
I must admit i'm relieved not to have to do them all myself.

12th May 2009, 04:40 PM #5 The way it works here is that the users do their own initial self-assessment, then people who have done the DSE Assessor's course (2x afternoon's worth) follow up any issues that the users have identified, which is at least partly to make sure that they really do need that new chair and aren't just trying it on
I got sick of the paperwork and set up an online self-assessment system which when we get time is going to have some bits of video added showing what the questions on the self-assessment *really* mean rather than the health and safety speak they're written in.
