That time is nearly here, summer hols. When teachers and student leave us for six weeks and the real work begins.
don’t know if most or any of u work the hols but I can tell this one is going to be hard been putting together a summer job list and probably got enough to last a year never mind 6 weeks and I keep adding to it. Here’s just a small selection.
Replace Print server
Replace ISA server
Final phase wireless network
Rewiring science and FT
Video editing suite
a load of software
Move offices
New technician starts
Oh and develop the new learning platform
What’s everybody else got planned? Beside a well earned break.

Remove entire network, hardware, servers, office and relocate to new building.
Once in new building unpack 50-ish new PCs' and set them up, after I've ensured the relocated kit is working correctly.

Re: Summer Hols Work
Re-do entire Art/Music suite and redeploy old machines to Admin staff.
Rebuild two ICT suites
(for me only) Organise handover documentation for new staff member
A general tidyup of rooms, paperwork, network, etc
Reinstallation of Bromcom 'Winfolder' (new version) across all staff PCs (easy, thank god)
New student / staff creation (on network, Sims, Bromcom, Truancy Call etc etc)
Probably other stuff that a) I have forgotten and b) I don't really care about...
Well, that's all I have planned. I daresay the NM has much less...... ;-)

Ultan and myself are going to:
install a network cable into each classroom
Recable at least one computer room, maybe more depending on time
Install cabling in new computer room
Install extra network cabling in server room
Add wireless link to sports hall
Along with the usual reimaging of computer rooms and other miscellaneous maintenance tasks
While that is going on, our VLE is allegedly going to be installed and if I can pin down the ICT coordinator some new projectors will be as well.

Re: Summer Hols Work
It looks like I've got it easy compared to everyone else :
install an LTSP network - 2 servers, 30 thin clients
chuck out a load of junk
go on holiday
and thats it!

And you all think you've got it hard:
Day 1: I've got to discover electricty, harness it, create the national grid ......
Day 2: Invent the transistor, make the first semiconductor, write an operating system .....
Day 3: Create the worlds first telephone, unleash a telecoms revolution, setup the internet across the world...
Day 4: Have a nap
Day 5: Setup the principals of currency, develope democarcy, implement free education for all the countries children ....
Then in the second week I need to make a time machine to go back and do all that.
Rest of the hols i'm free (time machine)
For all thos python fans out there

Electricity !? Oh...how we would have loved to have to discover electricity. Back in our day, we had to pay them to let us discover fire, then we would work on other research for 25 hours a day, for tuppence a year, come home where our fathers would beat us to death with a chainsaw and dance merry hell on our graves

Not a busy Summer this year... did the big stuff last year.
Amongst other things I have to:
* Replace most unmanaged switches for managed switches
* Hang the Bluesocket APs on the walls
* Do a little bit of computer configuration
* Build a server
* Move some server roles about to spread the load
* Tidy up a bit

Two jobs...
1. Throw servers out of window
2. Throw client machines out of window
Woohoo! Then no more things can go wrong!! No computers, no problems (for me anyway).
We are designing a poster for my office door that says: -
"Before knocking, please check the following:
- Have you tried turning it off and on again?
- Are you sure it is plugged in?"
While taken from "the IT crowd", I think it will cut my work by 50%, haha.
