    the greatest Electrical Pioneer of them all was Thomas Edison, who was a brilliant inventor despite the fact that he had little formal education and lived in New Jersey. Edison's first major invention in 1877, was the phonograph, which could soon be found in thousands of American homes, where it basically sat until 1923, when the record was invented. But Edison's greatest achievement came in 1879, when he invented the electric company. Edison's design was a brilliant adaptation of the simple electrical circuit: the electric company sends electricity through a wire to a customer, then immediately gets the electricity back through another wire, then (this is the brilliant part) sends it right back to the customer again.

    This means that an electric company can sell a customer the same batch of electricity thousands of times a day and never get caught, since very few customers take the time to examine their electricity closely. In fact the last year any new electricity was generated in the United States was 1937; the electric companies have been merely re-elling it ever since, which is why they have so much free time to apply for rate increases.

    Re: Summer Hols Work

    Not much to do here except:

    * Cable and switches for new ICT suite
    * Set up workstations, printers and interactive whiteboard for above
    * Another 6 interactive whiteboards to install.
    * Load balance print servers.
    * Build two 2TB NAS servers and configure for backups
    * Configure live state full metal restore anywhere for both servers and clients using acronis.
    * Whole school rebuild clients.
    * Comms room to re-cable
    * Install new ups
    * Cluster all Cisco switches for future Vlans
    * Move switches into cabinet of their own making room for extra servers
    * Clean all hardware and remove all dust and clegg

    and this is just on the first day. Hope I entice Webman to show his face but wouldn't blame him if he didn't.

    Re: Summer Hols Work

    I try and get jobs done in term time as much as possible. The last 2 weeks being pretty good as the computers rarely go on apart from when I let the kids hook up the playstation on the Interactive whiteboard’s and that’s doesn’t need the server. As long as I inform everyone I can get away with the server being down for part of the last 2 weeks. Sports days are also good times to work.

    My jobs for the last few weeks are to finish setting up the new server and policies, setup 20 computers 10 of which I have done. Set up the IT suite with new tables, which arrived today. Cable some more computers so another 5 to 10 in various rooms are online. Fiddle with the wireless network as a few spots are a little on the weak side for my liking. All of which should be get done with time to spare.

    Then I take the full summer holidays off. Not a chance I will be in apart from emergencies which are very rare.

    New PCs to spec and order
    New PCs to install
    Old ones to data wipe and send to charity
    Clear server room for new AC install
    Re-cable server room once new AC is installed
    Fix the blasted collator so it actually works
    Install new photocopiers
    Re-image 300 PCs once about 20 images are built
    Upgrade ram in lots of PCs (Thanks Sophos!)
    Tidy Store room and Office
    Defrost Fridge
    Finish IT inventory of all hardware
    Bin the dead consumerables that are mounting up
    Replace printers
    Move some staff from one office to another whilst builders are in
    Move them back once builders have left
    Paint and Decorate
    Clean Carpets
    Neaten up IT room wiring
    Re-write various policys
    Test using Mandatory profiles for students
    Add new students to the system
    Install lots of new software
    New Dataloggers to play with
    New Servers to install (phase 3 of 3/4)
    and probably a million other things between now and September

    Re: Summer Hols Work

    I am hopefully planning on:

    * VLAN the network using our HP Procurve switches - Not even thought about how to do it yet!
    * Finish off our school wireless network across the whole school (another 5 or 6 APs should do it)
    * Build new Censornet box (Hopefully Censornet 4)
    * Put together the finishing touches of a 6th Form student laptop scheme
    * Reinstall Veritas on Curriculum Network
    * Create a WSUS server for admin network
    * Prepare Network Diagrams
    * Create new packages for Quicktime, Flash, etc
    * Create new backup storage server for curriculum server using Buffalo Terrastation
    * Build new FirstClass server
    * Roll out Symantec Corporate AntiVirus to all servers and Workstations
    * Defrag Servers
    * Software Audit
    * Add new students / staff to network
    * Sims End of Year Procedures
    * Image all Curriculum workstations
    * Migrate website to a new webserver
    * 50 new machines to unbox and add to the network
    * Implement Alice Library System
    * Upgrade RAM on 15 machines
    * Oversee 7 data projector installations

    Thats what ive got wrote down so far - still another 3 weeks to go so plenty time for more jobs!!

    Re: Summer Hols Work

    I've got

    a new server to build and the server room to sort out.
    another server to demote, resize partitions or failing that rebuild and promote.
    another storage room to clear out.
    contractors in installing network cabling.
    2 different contractors in installing projectors and iwb.
    building refurbishment work going on.
    new users to create.
    old users to delete.
    machines to build.
    15 new music pcs to setup.
    Recording studio to setup.
    several laptops I'd imagine to setup.

    I've only got 2 weeks in the summer holiday to do this and I'm having the first 3 weeks off completely.

    Re: Summer Hols Work

    Same as others, not a major summer:

    Upgrade sims
    Ghost 30 PC's and put into on room (started already, just an upgrade on hardware)
    Ghost 30 PC's and move to room next door (these are the older pc's the above are replacing)
    Add all the new students to the servers
    Make sure all computers are working, have keyboards and mice
    Put servers into rack mounted cases (though I am expecting these before the hols)

    To be honest compared to a lot of you thats nothing...lol

    Re: Summer Hols Work

    Well, I am termtime only but had organised to come in and build a new machine, image it and ghost another 27, move comps out of one room, datawipe them, move comps in from another room, and set up the new ones (all at normal rate - don't get overtime)
    I had hoped to fit in the machine build before the end of term
    BUT
    Some moron, when speaking to Dell about the spec of the machines, specified desktop and didn't check the quote.
    Yesterday we got 28 towers delivered, and currently Dell are trying to charge for changing them
    Guess who the moron is? ops:

    I may not have a job, never mind something to do in the summer!!

    What a fool!! :toimonster:
