    Which Union do you recommend?

I'm in Unison at the moment but severely hacked off with our rather apathetic local representation.

I'm thinking of moving to either GMB or ATL.

I like a degree of militancy in a union so which do folks recommend?

I'm thinking of leaving GMB as they don't appear to have really done anything for me.

I belong to www.voicetheunion.org.uk I'm not sure what others expect from their unions but if it's obtaining huge payrises then I'm not surprised that they are not happy because it isn't likely to happen. What attracted Voice to me is that it is a non-striking union and they have some reasonable member benefits like cheap airport parking.

If you are interested and would like to PM me first, they do have an incentive for recruiting new members

Good question tech_guy. I've been meaning to rejoin unison (they didnt follow me over to my new job - oops). But have also been wondering what was out there.

They dont seem to be the same Union that my dad was part of back in the 80's when my dad was a nurse.

Back in the 80s UNISON was NUPE (Hospital Workers and the like) and NALGO (Local Government where we would naturally be). They both merged to become a single Public Service union, but obviously the two seperate unions concentrated more on their own arenas.

Militant union - isn't that an oxymoron since the Thatcher years? A tradition happily carried on by New Tory sorry I meant New Labour!

Another vote for Voice - no political affiliation, non militant, non strike driven and no hassle!

How much money do they take each month is also another question? Unison take 14 a month from me.

    Hmm.....

Whilst people aren't going to gain massive salary increases just from being in a union I don't know it pays to be in one which your lea works with which in our case is gmb, unison and I think unite.

I think you're probably asking the wrong people, as your issues with Unison are that you don't think the local reps are representing you properly you need to get opinions from colleagues about how good the GMB or ATL reps are.

Have you considered the other option of staying with Unison and becoming a rep and trying to be less apathetic?

Voice payments depend on hours worked - I'm almost full time and that's just under 8 a month.
